Allan Spencer: Director of Finance

Biography

Allan joined the University in 2005. He has been working in Higher Education finance for thirty years, having worked previously at the University of Bristol and the University of Southampton.

Allan was awarded a Modern Languages degree at the University of Oxford then trained as a Chartered Accountant in Cambridge. After qualifying, he moved to be a Financial Analyst at Unipart in a blue-chip financial environment before working with SMEs at Spicer and Oppenheim in Bristol.

Allan moved into the Higher Education sector at the University of Bristol in the early 1990s before moving to the University of Southampton as Deputy Director of Finance.

At Sussex, Allan leads the Finance division providing a full range of financial services to schools and professional services. Allan is a member of the University Executive Team and leads proposals to Council on financing and financial strategy. He is a trustee of the University’s non-academic pension, USPAS, and chairs the governance board of the USPSS pension scheme. Allan has been Regional Secretary and a national Executive Member for the British Universities Finance Directors Group, is a long-standing a member of the Employers Pension Forum and was formerly a member of the ESRC Audit Committee.
