Institute of Technology Apprenticeships

The University of Sussex intends to deliver degree apprenticeship programmes in partnership with the Sussex & Surrey Institute of Technology. Our ambition is to deliver apprenticeships from 2024 and we will be applying to become an approved provider later this year.

What we’re doing

Institutes of Technology (IoTs) are unique collaborations between further education colleges, universities, and leading employers. The new Sussex & Surrey IoT will deliver progressive technical qualifications within the Sussex and Surrey area.

IoTs support employers to get the skills and talent they need to thrive through high-quality, innovative and flexible education. Backed by £290 million in Government investment, IoTs are opening state-of-the art facilities and offering new pathways into education and employment. Now is the time to jump on board.

Bringing in Sussex’s focus on employability, sustainability, and passion for diversity and inclusion, we will be developing degree apprenticeships in:

Courses will be designed and delivered alongside employers, so you can be confident that the training your staff receive can be applied to your business immediately.

We are also looking at apprenticeship offerings outside of the IoT remit, such as within education and social work. Please get in touch with our apprenticeships team at apprenticeships@sussex.ac.uk to explore how we might help.

Why we’re doing it

Our first group of apprenticeships will be in engineering and computing. We recognise the importance of increasing the diversity of candidates in engineering, as well as offering alternative routes into different kinds of careers.

Engineering accounts for 18% of UK employment and skill shortages in the sector are currently a big issue. It is estimated that 200,000 skilled engineers will be needed between now and 2024.

We want to play our part in addressing this technical skills gap in the industry. By working with us, you’ll have a say to make sure that your business is future-proofed with the right skills and experience for your workforce.

And importantly, we want to open more pathways for young people in the region to experience different forms of education and create seamless routes through to the workplace. By adding apprenticeships to what we offer, we hope to diversify routes and pathways to various qualifications, opportunities and careers.

Employers: get involved

You could be part of the design group that helps us shape the apprenticeships to meet employer needs. We’d love to meet you to explore how we can work with you and so you can understand how our apprenticeships will run.
