Autumn teaching

Screen drama depends on the strength of its visual story-telling, on conveying emotions, information and ideas through images and the imaginative combination of picture, sound and speech. The best narrative films have an individual style and point of view that encourage the audience to see the world in a new light.

On this module you’ll further explore the narrative filmmaking process. You will view a range of examples from the history of narrative filmmaking to better understand different approaches to both storytelling technique and filmic style.

You will be guided through each production stage – development, pre-production, production and post-production.

You will look at topics including:

• directing actors
• lighting and cinematography
• art direction
• editing
• sound design.

You will also develop specific production roles and learn to collaborate effectively in a team.

Contact hours and workload

This module is approximately 300 hours of work. This breaks down into about 33 hours of contact time and about 267 hours of independent study. The University may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.

We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2023/24. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to COVID-19, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum.
