Spring teaching

This module provides you with insights into key professional, theoretical and methodological issues associated with contemporary teaching, learning, assessment and pastoral support in schools.

It provides access to extensive and developmental practice experience in the context of English schools. You’ll have the opportunity to work with established teachers in supporting the learning and wellbeing of young people.

The School of Education and Social Work helps facilitate connections so that students who sign up for this optional module will be matched with placements with established school partners.

Practice experience will involve direct work with children and young people. You are expected to develop professional attributes and practical teaching skills. You will be supported by the module convenor, peer support and mentors in schools.

To undertake this module, you will be required to satisfactorily complete an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check prior to attending their placement. International students are also required to obtain a recent criminal record certificate from their home country. A list of admissible certificates can be found on the UK Government webpages.

Contact hours and workload

This module is approximately 300 hours of work. This breaks down into about 174 hours of contact time and about 126 hours of independent study. The University may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.

We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2023/24. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to COVID-19, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum. We’ll make sure to let our applicants know of material changes to modules at the earliest opportunity.
