Photography: Critical Narratives (P4071)

Autumn teaching

The module aims to develop your skills in the creation of photographic projects while expanding your knowledge of the theories and practices common to photography, as well as enhancing your knowledge of research methods, production techniques and processes.

As well as producing your own photographs you'll collaborate with a group of your peers to develop each other's ideas.

This module builds on the practical and conceptual skills acquired at level 1.

It allows you to focus on the creation of a media project while expanding your knowledge of the theories and practices common to photography.

You'll:

• enhance your understanding of key processes and techniques
• learn to research in depth
• draw on a range of sources
• translate your research into an appropriate visual form which demonstrates critical awareness of the subject and the genre.

Contact hours and workload

This module is approximately 300 hours of work. This breaks down into about 33 hours of contact time and about 267 hours of independent study. The University may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.

We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2023/24. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to COVID-19, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum.
