Biography

Nicholas is an co-teacher in the School of Global Studies and research associate of the Sussex Centre for Conflict and Security Research.  His research interests include critical geopolitics, the history of geopolitics, British politics, discourse analysis, international theory and identity theory.  He co-wrote a chapter on ‘Geopolitics and Grand Strategy’ with Dr Stefanie Ortmann which was published in Baylis, Wirtz and Gray’s Strategy in the Contemporary World (fifth edition) in 2016.  His current research projects engage with geopolitical identity and Brexit and geopolitics in autobiographical literature.

He has worked in secondary education for nearly ten years and maintains a keen interest in pedagogical matters, Special Educational Needs and widening participation in Higher Education.

Nicholas studied at the University of Southampton and received his PhD from the University of Sussex in 2016 with a thesis entitled ‘The Island Race: Geopolitics and identity in British foreign policy discourse since 1949’.
